What junk removal companies won't take, and where to take it instead

Short answer: junk removal companies, including us, generally can't take hazardous waste. That includes liquid paint, chemicals, fuel, propane tanks, asbestos, medical waste and anything flammable or leaking. Those need a household hazardous waste (HHW) drop-off. Almost everything else is fine: furniture, appliances, mattresses, electronics, yard waste and construction debris.
Items most haulers won't take
| Item | Why | Where it goes instead |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid paint and stains | Landfills don't accept liquids. Oil-based paint is hazardous | HHW drop-off. Dry latex paint can go in the trash in many cities. |
| Motor oil, antifreeze, gasoline | Flammable, toxic | Auto parts stores (oil), HHW drop-off |
| Pesticides, pool chemicals, solvents | Toxic, can react in a truck | HHW drop-off |
| Propane tanks and gas cylinders | Can explode | Exchange cages, propane dealers, HHW |
| Asbestos | Regulated. Needs licensed abatement | A licensed asbestos contractor |
| Medical waste and sharps | Biohazard | Sharps mail-back, pharmacy programs |
| Ammunition and explosives | Danger | Local police non-emergency line |
| Car batteries | Lead and acid | Auto parts stores, scrap recyclers |
| Loose lithium batteries | Fire risk in transport | Battery drop boxes, HHW |
Things people assume we can't take, but we can
- Refrigerators, freezers and AC units. We haul them so the refrigerant can be properly recovered, as federal rules require.
- Mattresses and box springs.
- TVs, computers and electronics. They go to e-waste recycling. Wipe your data first. See our office electronics guide.
- Hot tubs and playsets. We cut them down. See demolition.
- Construction debris: drywall, wood, tile, shingles and concrete, priced by weight.
- Yard waste: brush, branches, sod and fencing. See yard waste removal.
- Empty paint cans and dried-out latex paint.
- Tires in small numbers. Ask first, because disposal fees apply.
Local drop-off options for what we can't take
Rules and hours change. Always check before you go.
- Austin: the city's Recycle & Reuse Drop-off Center (2514 Business Center Dr) takes household hazardous waste from Austin residents by appointment.
- Pflugerville: the city's Clean Up Day events take paint, batteries and electronics. Check the city website for dates.
- Round Rock, Cedar Park and other Williamson County cities: watch your city's site for HHW collection events.
- Medicines: many pharmacies have take-back kiosks.
Our bulk trash rules guide covers what each city's curbside pickup will and won't take.
Why the rules exist
Hazardous items can leak, ignite or react inside a closed trailer on a Texas summer day. Landfills and transfer stations also refuse them, and a hauler who brings them in can lose access. A company that says "we take everything, no questions" is either sorting it out properly for a fee, or dumping it somewhere it shouldn't go.
