How much does it cost to haul concrete, dirt and shingles?

Short answer: heavy debris like concrete, dirt, rock, tile and shingles fills a trailer by weight long before it fills it by space. That's why haulers quote it differently from furniture. A small pile, like a broken patio slab or a bathroom's worth of tile, is often a quarter to half load price. Bigger jobs are quoted from photos or a site visit.
Why heavy debris is priced differently
Our normal load prices ($125–$450, see pricing) are for typical household junk. A trailer full of concrete would weigh far more than a trailer can safely carry. So for heavy materials, the load is limited by weight, and the price reflects the labor of breaking and loading heavy material plus the disposal or recycling fee.
How much common debris weighs
These are approximate weights per cubic yard (a pile about 3 feet on every side):
| Material | Approx. weight per cubic yard |
|---|---|
| Concrete (solid) | about 3,900–4,000 lbs |
| Dirt or fill | 2,000–2,700 lbs |
| Gravel and rock | 2,400–3,000 lbs |
| Brick and pavers | 2,500–3,000 lbs |
| Roofing shingles | about 200–350 lbs per roofing square (100 sq ft) |
| Ceramic tile with mortar | Heavy. A single bathroom floor can be several hundred pounds |
| Yard brush (for comparison) | 200–400 lbs |
A small slab of 10 by 10 feet, 4 inches thick, is about 1.2 cubic yards of concrete. That's well over 4,000 pounds.
What drives the price
- Weight and volume of the material.
- Breaking it up. Slabs, footings and steps may need to be broken before loading.
- Access. Wheelbarrowing from a backyard through a side gate takes more labor than loading from a driveway.
- Mixed loads. Clean concrete and clean dirt can often be recycled or reused. Mixed debris goes to the landfill at a higher fee.
- Rebar and wire mesh in concrete add cutting time.
Ways to save on heavy hauling
- Keep it clean. Separate concrete from dirt, wood and trash. Clean material is cheaper to dispose of.
- Pile it near the driveway if you can.
- Break slabs into pieces you can lift, if you're doing the demo.
- Bundle the job. Add your other debris to the same visit.
- Check reuse options. Clean fill dirt and broken concrete are sometimes wanted by neighbors or landscapers.
Jobs we often quote
- Old patio slabs, walkways and steps (demolition).
- Tile, mortar and backer board from bathroom and kitchen remodels (construction debris removal).
- Roofing tear-off leftovers.
- Landscaping rock, pavers and dirt from yard projects (yard waste removal).
