Hauling service vs. renting a truck: what does DIY really cost?

Short answer: renting a truck looks cheaper, but once you add mileage, fuel, landfill fees, a helper and the day it takes, a small to medium load usually costs about the same as hiring a hauler. The hauler also does the lifting and donates or recycles what they can. DIY wins when you already own a truck and have a strong friend.
What renting a truck really costs
| Line item | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Truck rental | Day rate, often low in ads |
| Mileage | Per-mile fee on top of the day rate, every mile, including the drive to and from the rental lot |
| Fuel | You return the tank at the level you got it |
| Landfill or transfer station | Gate fee by weight or load, plus extra fees for mattresses, tires or appliances |
| Moving supplies | Dolly, straps, gloves, tarps |
| Your time | Usually 4–8 hours: pick up, load, drive, wait in line, unload, return |
| Help | Pizza and beer, or paying a friend |
| Risk | Your back, your walls and doors, and the rental's damage policy |
Add those up for a sofa, a mattress and a garage's worth of boxes, and many people land within a few dollars of a half-trailer price ($225–$300) with PickUp Haulers. That price includes two people, the loading, the drive and the disposal.
Where you have to go
Around Pflugerville and Round Rock, the main public option is the Williamson County Landfill in Hutto (600 Landfill Rd), open Monday–Friday 7–5 and Saturday 7–noon. Austin residents can book the city's Recycle & Reuse Drop-off Center for some items. Check hours, fees and what they accept before you go, because some items are refused or charged extra.
And you'll unload it all again by hand at the other end.
When DIY makes sense
- You own a pickup or a trailer.
- It's a few light items close to the drop-off.
- You have help and a free afternoon.
- The items are free to drop off, like clean brush at a city facility.
When a hauling service makes sense
- Heavy or awkward items: sofas, sectionals, fridges, treadmills, hot tubs.
- Stairs, attics or long carries.
- Mixed loads with donations, scrap metal, electronics and trash. We sort them so each goes to the right place.
- Deadlines: move-outs, closings, turnovers.
- Your time is worth more than the difference.
The hidden cost: injuries
Lifting injuries are common when people move heavy things themselves. A strained back costs more than any truck rental. If the job involves a fridge, a piano or anything that takes two people on stairs, let a crew do it.
